The top photo is from the 1970 Targa Florio race. The three factory 908s (#12, #36 and #40) had the unusual orange symbols painted on them so that they could be easily identified in the pits or by the Porsche spotters around the course.
Jesse, I've seen other teams do the same thing with different coloured headlight colours, or different coloured spoilers or a coloured strip across the top of the windscreen, but the Porsche scheme is the most spectacular that I have come across.
